Volunteer with Fishtown

If you have been a visitor to Fishtown for years or have just discovered its charms, you can be in the middle of the action! Fishtown depends upon the energy, time, skills, and resources of its volunteers to help ensure the success of preserving this treasured site. Whether helping to create magical events, lending a hand in the office, or sharing your knowledge of the Great Lakes with the public, volunteers help keep Fishtown Preservation running smoothly. From daily tasks to special events, volunteers serve on a weekly, monthly or as-needed basis.

Here are some ways you can be involved with Fishtown:

  • Events
  • Interpretation
  • In the Office

Fishtown EventsOur events require the help of many dedicated volunteers. We have volunteer opportunities during events as well as positions available on planning committees that work in the months prior to the event. Some volunteer opportunities include registration at the Friends of Fishtown 5K, serving whitefish chowder during the Leland Heritage Celebration, and greeting attendees at the Benefit Brunch at the Buebird, as well as other general tasks.

Fishtown InterpretationMost people who explore Fishtown have never seen a fish tug or a net reel and don’t know anything about Great Lakes Whitefish! There is nothing like hearing about a place from someone who absolutely loves it. Come spend some quality time in a place you love, and share your passion and commitment to Fishtown.

A volunteer on-site in Fishtown serves as an ambassador for the organization and promotes a positive image/reputation of the organization. They welcome visitors to Fishtown, provide information on programs and events, educate visitors about Fishtown and the Leland community, and communicate the mission of the Fishtown Preservation Society (FPS). In addition, on-site volunteers sell FPS merchandise; gather information about visitors, and collects donations from time to time. A commitment to weekly shifts is preferred; however, fill-in positions are also available. Opportunities are available every day between May-October.

Non-profit organizations depend on behind the scenes work, especially in the office. Come spend a few hours with us in our office. Administrative volunteers help with our database, answer the phone, and help run errands during extra busy times. Office volunteers can also assist in newsletter mailings and getting out fundraising campaign letters. You can join us for the camaraderie it takes to get a successful mailing out the door, whether stuffing envelopes or applying labels.

If you would like to join our volunteer program, please e-mail us and let us know how you’d like to help.
