What Is Fishtown

Fishtown is a collection of weathered fishing shanties, smokehouses, overhanging docks, fish tugs and charter boats along the Leland River in Leland, Michigan. The heart of a commercial fishing village, Fishtown is where we can still see and feel a connection to the long tradition of Great Lakes maritime culture.

Fishtown Preservation Society exists to assure public access to Fishtown and to maintain its historical integrity, working waterfront, artifacts and stories through preservation, education and stewardship.

Excited to have Catherine Dunn return to Art Shant Excited to have Catherine Dunn return to Art Shanty this week! Catherine is an artist that experiments with mediums and the results are beautiful. Come and see her exquisite paintings of Leelanau County wildlife, gauche paintings and her cyanotypes. Everything she brought with her is original artwork and is for sale. Come by and see for yourself! BTW—She's also part of the dive team helping to eradicate the milfoil on Lake Leelanau while she's visiting—she's pretty awesome!

The girls are back together in Fishtown! We are ex The girls are back together in Fishtown! We are excited to share that Janice Sue was brought back to the Leland River this afternoon. She was removed from Fishtown over two and half years ago because the docks could no longer hold her. With the new docks in place she was able to return home. #welcomehome #fishtownforever #janicesueweloveyou Thanks again to the teams from KM Contractors LLC, Matt Fogg St. James Marine Co, and Kasson Contracting that worked through freezing temperatures over the winter to get the docks installed.
