Created by local Leland artist, Malcolm Chatfield, the Tug emblem has acted as Lelands unofficial logo, and a reminder of our heritage, for over a decade. Based on Malcolms artwork from 1970s Leelanau, the Tug emblem represents the old fashioned fishing tug characteristic of 1900 Fishtown. Leland is one of the last few fishing ports to still actively use tugs for fishing Lake Michigan waters. Many Leelanau locals and visitors alike view our Tug emblem as a representation of this unique place we all love and the qualities it stands for: Family, fun, community, heritage, and the Leelanau utopia.
