Are you looking forward to fresh and smoked fish this spring? For generations of families, this is the taste that defines Leland. First though, we have to catch the fish.
When you come to visit, you might notice that both the Joy and the Janice Sue have refreshed looks. The restoration work on both fishing tugs is now complete and, thanks to our generous donors, we will continue to keep them working on the Great Lakes. Captain Joel Petersen and crewman Adam Kilway went to work hauling nets out of storage last weekend and hope to set several trapnets with the Joy by early April. Last year, we caught our quota of whitefish and hope to do the same this year. The chub harvest was anticipated to be low due to declining levels of the fish. The same is true this year.
According to our Facebook fans, some of the best ways to enjoy locally caught whitefish include grilling with lemon, boiling with corn and potatoes and of course, dip with cream cheese and dill.
